Research Students
Tokyo Tech accepts individuals wishing to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty member (academic advisor) at Tokyo Tech as research students, although they are unable to receive any form of degree. Given that research is the purpose of study, recognition of sufficient scholastic ability to conduct research is a precondition for acceptance. Before applying, you must contact the academic advisor and obtain their approval of your application. Research students do not, as a general rule, attend lectures, but if your academic advisor regards any lectures as necessary, you may attend them after first obtaining the permission of the faculty member(s) in charge of those courses.

This category of Research Students targets graduate-level international students who may be accepted either on the basis of an exchange agreement between the university at which they are enrolled and Tokyo Tech, or as part of joint research.
In the case of students wishing to enroll as part of an exchange agreement, Research Students are only accepted for a period of up to one year as a general rule. Interested students should contact the Student Exchange Officer at their university.
Students admitted in accordance with an exchange agreement that provides for the non-collection of tuition fee are exempt from paying the Entrance Examination Fee, Admission Fee or Tuition Fees. Interested students may also apply for a scholarship with a recommendation from Tokyo Tech. In principle, students wishing to apply for a scholarship must begin their research period in either April or October. Students not applying for a scholarship may start their research in any month, but they should submit the necessary documents to the International Student Division at Tokyo Tech at least three months ahead of time to enable the necessary procedures to be completed before admission.
In the case of students wishing to enroll as part of joint research, applicants should carry out application procedures through a Tokyo Tech faculty member involved in the joint research.
Reference:
Admission documents are exchanged between the Student Exchange Officer at the university with which Tokyo has an exchange agreement or the applicant's academic advisor at Tokyo Tech and the International Student Exchange Division.
