Scholarships
Scholarships are divided into those that are guaranteed prior to admission, and those that can be applied for after admission. When a scholarship is provided by the Japanese Government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, hereafter referred to as MEXT), the recipient is referred to as a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Student. Students other than MEXT scholarship students are referred to as privately funded international students, irrespective of whether or not they receive a scholarship. MEXT scholarships provided by the Ministry of Education, Sports, Culture, Science and Technology are representative of the type of scholarship that is guaranteed prior to admission. Tokyo Tech also recommends students for Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarships aimed at Young Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP) students and Category 8 Research Students.
After admission, there are approximately 50 scholarships that Tokyo Tech can recommend students for, including the Gakushu Shoureihi. There are also approximately 20 scholarships that individuals can apply for directly. Privately funded international students wishing to apply for a scholarship must register their application with the Student Support Division during the registration period in either April or October.
Reference: Information about various scholarships is available on the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) website.
Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship
As shown below, Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship programs are divided
into 7 categories, and scholarship students may be recruited from overseas
(through Embassy Recommendation or University (Tokyo Tech) Recommendation)
and from amongst privately funded international students already in Japan
(Domestic Recruitment).

Embassy Recommendations
The MEXT requests Japanese embassies and diplomatic missions overseas to
recommend Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship students. Because recruitment
periods differ according to each country, please initially check with the
Japanese embassy in your own country. The scheduled period of arrival in
Japan for Undergraduate Students is April and April or October for Graduate-level
Research Students. In order to be assured of admission to Tokyo Tech, Research
Students must obtain a as a Letter of Acceptance from a Tokyo Tech faculty
member. After you pass the 1st Round Screening at the embassy, please contact
a faculty member at Tokyo Tech as early as possible and receive a Letter
of Acceptance from him/her. The MEXT requests each university to admit
candidate Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship students on the basis
of recommendations received from overseas embassies, and the selection
of scholarship recipients is conducted by a screening committee. The Letter
of Acceptance is a document in which a Tokyo Tech faculty member promises
to act as your academic advisor if you are accepted as a scholarship student.
Candidates are advised to contact potential Tokyo Tech academic advisors,
referring to the Tokyo Tech researchers' database on the Tokyo Tech website,
and obtain a Letter of Acceptance from them.
Research Students receiving Embassy Recommendation in China attend a one-year preparatory course (basic Japanese language; specialized Japanese language) at the Preparatory School for Chinese Students to Japan (within the Northeast Normal University of China) in Changchun City before coming to Japan. Please note that the period for requesting a Letter of Acceptance for Chinese students differs from that of students from other countries, as detailed below.
Japanese Government (MEXT) scholarship recipients who come to Japan as Research Students attend an Intensive Japanese Language Course for six months following arrival as Japanese Intensive Course Students. When a student's Japanese language proficiency is recognized as sufficient, Tokyo Tech will then admit him/her as a Research Student. If a Research Student or Japanese Intensive Course Student passes the screening examination while studying at Tokyo Tech, he may enroll in a Master's Program or Doctoral Program in either October or April.
Undergraduate students are required to study at either Tokyo University of Foreign Studies or Osaka University for one year prior to admission to Tokyo Tech, and may enroll in April if they pass the Special Screening Examination for International Undergraduate Students administered by Tokyo Tech.

University(Tokyo Tech) Recommendation
Tokyo Tech provides the Ministry of Education with recommendation for awarding
Japanese government (MEXT) scholarships to academically outstanding individuals
who are considered in need of a scholarship. Recommendation can be provided
for individuals scheduled to come to Japan to study at Tokyo Tech as Research
Students or Graduate Students (Overseas Applications), or individuals registered
in the third or fourth year as undergraduate students, or Graduate Students
already studying at Tokyo Tech (Domestic Recruitment).
The following explanation concerns Overseas Applications only.
As shown above, University Recommendations are divided into 4 categories, and Tokyo Tech provides recommendations for 2 of these categories: (1) Research Student (Regular Course) and (2) Research Student (Special Course). It is not possible to apply for both these courses at the same time.
- For Course (1) Research Student (Regular Course), students enter Tokyo Tech as Research Students as a general rule. A student
who passes the entrance examination during the Research Student period
may enroll in the Master's or Doctoral Program the following April or October.
It is not possible to switch from Course (1) to Course (2) Research Student
(Special Course = International Graduate Program(A)) once the student has enrolled. The scholarship period can be extended
under some conditions. Priority is given to applications from students
from or students who have graduated from universities which have an academic
exchange agreement with Tokyo Tech.
- Under Course (2) Research Student (Special Course), students enroll directly in the Tokyo Tech International Graduate Program's
Degree Courses (Master's Program, Doctoral Program, Integrated Doctoral
Education Program). Opportunities are available for academically outstanding
applicants to become Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship Students (see
2.3.1. Overseas Applications). The scholarship period can be extended under
some conditions.
- Candidates for Recommendation
- (1)Individuals who have been officially recommended by an overseas university with which Tokyo Tech has an academic exchange agreement
- (2)Individuals who have been officially recommended by the President or faculty of equal or greater rank than Faculty Dean of an overseas university other than those listed in (1) with which Tokyo Tech has a history of exchange (including exchanges other than institutional exchanges)
- (3)Individuals who have been recommended as being an outstanding contributor to the improvement of university education or research by the President of a university other than those listed in (1) with which Tokyo Tech does not have exchange

University; Embassy Recommendation for a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship;
or the JASSO Short-term Student Exchange Program.
- A Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship will not be awarded if the Applicant
was a grantee of a Japnese Government(MEXT) in the past unless he/she has
had at least three years of research or teaching experience after completion
of the first scholarship. This exclusion will not apply to an applicant,
who (i) as an international student in Japan received training in the Japanese
language and/or Japnese culture at a university and graduate from it, or
who (ii) was an international student in Japan under the Japan-Korea Joint
Science and Engineering Student Program.
- Students who obtain a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship through University Recommendation cannot enter or transfer to another university as one of the conditions of the scholarship is that the students receives education or research advice at the university for which they were recommended.
