Academic Advisors
Fourth-year Undergraduate Students, Research Students, and Graduate Students conduct research under the guidance of faculty members at Tokyo Tech. Individuals wishing to study at Tokyo Tech as Research Students or Graduate Students must therefore find a faculty member willing to advise them.
Category 7 Research Students cannot apply without the approval of an Academic Advisor. Graduate Students taking the examination in Japan must contact the academic advisor before applying. Individuals wishing to study in the International Graduate Program (Overseas Applications) cannot apply without a recommendation from their prospective academic advisor at Tokyo Tech. Individuals who have already secured a scholarship to study in Japan cannot be admitted to Tokyo Tech without the approval of a Tokyo Tech faculty member. Various administrative procedures are carried out via the student's academic advisor after admission, and so it is very important that individuals wishing to study at Tokyo Tech find an academic advisor who will agree to supervise them.
There are different ways for finding an academic advisor, but basically you are expected to do this by yourself. To begin with, please check the Tokyo Tech Website and find a faculty member appropriate for your research by referring to information contained in the "Organization" and "Admission Guide" links in the Tokyo Tech Guide and the "Faculties' Database" link in Tokyo Tech Online Information. Once you find the name of an appropriate faculty member, you should contact them directly. Please note that assistant professors cannot become academic advisors. Moreover, not all faculty members may provide guidance for International Graduate Program and Young Scientist Exchange Program (YSEP) students. Given that in some cases it is impossible to change academic advisors after admission, applicants should give careful thought to the content of their research and their research plan before contacting a faculty member. When doing so, it is important that you provide the faculty member with sufficient documents and information and allow them enough time to make an informed decision. You may not receive a reply if the faculty member thinks you have provided insufficient or inadequate information.
