1. General Prospectus

Tokyo Institute of Technology (”Tokyo Tech”) launched its International Graduate Program on October 1, 2007 to offer overseas students an opportunity to enroll directly in the Master’s or Doctoral programs at Tokyo Tech and to enable qualified students with little or no knowledge of Japanese to pursue a full-degree program of advanced studies in Japan.
Tokyo Tech has six graduate schools, each participating in the program:Graduate School of Science and Engineering; Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology;Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering;Graduate School of Information Science and Technology;Graduate School of Decision Science Technology;and Graduate School of Innovation Management. The various programs available ensure that students find the best program to further their research and study, acquire broader knowledge and understanding, and engage in advanced research over the long term. A limited number of applicants with outstanding academic performance are entitled to apply for a scholarship from Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology(MEXT) through a recommendation from Tokyo Tech.

There are three types of programs in International Graduate Program(A):Integrated Doctoral Education Program, Master’s Program and Doctoral Program.

(1) Integrated Doctoral Education Program
This program is designed to combine the Master’s Program and Doctoral Program, which cannot be separated. In the Master’s Program, students who demonstrate outstanding academic and research performance during the program may be able to reduce thier period of study. In the Doctoral Program, students who demonstrate outstanding academic and research performance during the program may be able to reduce their period of study. Thus, the minimum period of the entire program can be three years in total and includes both the Master’s Program and Doctoral Program.

In the conventional structure of the Japanese postgraduate program, students studying for a Master’s degree must take 30 credits or more in the two year program, and for a Doctoral degree, an additional three years of study must follow the Master’s Program.Integrated Doctoral Education Programs require all students to enroll in the Tokyo Tech Master's Program(Pre-Doctoral Program), regardless of whether or not they have already received their Master's degree.Credits obtained in graduate school can be transferred to Tokyo Tech(maximum 10 credits) upon approval.Students enrolling in this program must take a Master’s degree qualifying exam after approximately one year, at which point a Master's degree may be awarded.

(2) Master’s Program (Pre-Doctoral Program)
Enrolled students who obtain the designated number of credits in a predetermined program of study in a department after at least two years of supervised study will be awarded a Master's degree upon approval of their thesis and a successful final examination.Students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance during the program may be able to reduce their period of study.

(3) Doctoral Program
Enrolled students who obtain the designated number of credits in a predetermined program of study in a department after at least three years of supervised study will be awarded a Doctoral degree upon approval of their thesis and a successful final examination.
Students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance during the program may be able to reduce their period of study.
